SEO Services Australia: An SEO Agency That Measures First

FactoryJet provides SEO services in Australia for businesses that want enquiries, not a ranking report. We are an SEO agency that measures before it sells. Before we quote, we check which of your search terms Australians actually use, who holds page one, and whether that gap can be closed. Then we fix the technical and local basics first, and earn links rather than buy them.

Free site review. Send your address. We crawl the site, check your Google Business Profile and send a written note on the three biggest problems.

What do SEO services in Australia actually include?

§01

SEO services make your website more likely to appear when Australians search for what you sell. The work has three parts: repair the technical faults that stop Google reading the site, build pages and a Google Business Profile that answer what buyers type, and earn links from real sites. Done in that order, the fast work pays for the slow work.

§02
Four terms, in plain English

Technical SEO is whether search engines can crawl and index your pages. On-page SEO is the words and structure of each page. Local SEO is your Google Business Profile and map results. Off-page SEO is links and mentions from other websites. An SEO audit checks all four and ranks what to fix first.

§03

The competition is real. The Australian Bureau of Statistics counted 2,814,778 actively trading businesses at 30 June 2026, up 3.1% in a year. Most of them want the same first page. The businesses that win it are rarely the ones spending most. They are the ones who fixed the basics, picked terms with real demand, and stopped paying for work that could not move the number.

What an SEO agency should do

SEO services in the order that pays back: five stages

Most SEO is sold in reverse: a monthly retainer for links and blog posts before anyone has checked whether Google can read the site. These five stages are the order we work in, and the order we suggest you hold any SEO company to, including us.

  1. 01

    Technical repair

    Typical payback: Weeks

Fix what stops search engines reading the site: blocked pages, leftover noindex tags, content that only appears after JavaScript runs, broken internal links, and duplicate versions of the same page competing with each other.

  2. 02

    Google Business Profile

    Typical payback: Weeks

Claim, verify, categorise specifically, set service areas honestly, add real photographs, answer reviews. For a local business this is usually the single highest-return hour of work available anywhere in a search plan.

  3. 03

    Consistent business details

    Typical payback: Weeks to months

Make your name, address and contact details identical everywhere they appear, including old directory listings you have forgotten about. Inconsistency quietly holds back local ranking and never announces itself.

  4. 04

    Pages built on verified demand

Typical payback: One to two quarters

Write pages for terms that have real Australian volume, checked against advertising data rather than impression counts. One strong page per service beats five thin ones on the same topic.

  5. 05

    Earned links and mentions

    Typical payback: Quarters to years

Publish things worth referencing, sponsor genuinely, build supplier and sector relationships. This is the slowest lever and the one that decides whether you can compete on a head term at all.

Google says some changes take effect within hours and others take several months, and advises waiting a few weeks before judging a change: Google SEO Starter Guide.

Our SEO services

SEO services for Australian businesses, from audit to earned links

You can take any one of these on its own. Most Australian businesses start with an SEO audit and the local basics, then decide on ongoing work once they have seen the first results.

CAP‑01

Technical SEO

Crawling and indexing faults, Core Web Vitals, site structure, internal links, redirects, canonical tags and structured data. Finite work with an end date, usually where the fastest movement comes from.

CAP‑02

SEO audit

A ranked list of what is holding the site back, not a hundred-page export. You get the three problems that cost you most, why, and what fixing each would take. Useful on its own even if you do the work in-house.

CAP‑03

Local SEO

Google Business Profile set-up and repair, categories, service areas, photos, review replies and consistent business details across Australian directories. The highest-return work for trades, clinics and shopfronts. For practices, see dental SEO in Australia.

CAP‑04

Ecommerce and Shopify SEO

Collection and category pages written for real search terms, product structured data, and control of the duplicate URLs that filters and variants create. Built by the same team that builds Shopify stores in Australia.

CAP‑05

Content on verified demand

One strong page per service, for terms with real Australian search volume. We draft, you correct what only you would know, we publish. Written plainly so both Google and AI summaries can quote it.

CAP‑06

Earned links and digital PR

Research and resources worth citing, supplier and industry relationships, genuine sponsorships and local press. Slow, and the only kind of link that does not carry a penalty risk.

CAP‑07

SEO consulting

For businesses with a marketer or developer already. An SEO consultant sets direction, reviews work and answers questions, and your team carries it out. Often better value than a full retainer.

CAP‑08

Sector SEO

Dental, legal, trades, B2B and professional services. Each has its own search patterns and rules. Health and legal pages in particular need claims your regulator would accept, checked by you before they go live.

CAP‑09

AI search visibility

Getting named in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews as well as ranking. It shares most of its foundations with classic SEO, and has its own page: AI SEO in Australia.

Technical SEO and SEO audits

What a proper SEO audit checks, and why the order matters

An SEO audit is only useful if it tells you what to do first. Open any check to see what we look at. Every audit ends with a ranked list, not a spreadsheet of warnings.

01Crawling and indexing

Can Google reach every page that matters, and is anything important blocked by robots.txt, a stray noindex tag or a login? We read the page indexing report in your own Search Console, which names the cause for each excluded page.

02Speed and Core Web Vitals

Google publishes three pass marks: Largest Contentful Paint within 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint under 200 milliseconds and Cumulative Layout Shift under 0.1. We check real-user data where it exists and find the heavy images, scripts and apps behind a fail.

03Site structure and internal links

Every service should have one clear page, linked from the menu or from related pages. Orphan pages with no links pointing at them are hard for Google to find and rarely rank.

04Duplicate pages and canonical tags

The same content at several addresses splits your ranking signals. Common Australian causes: old and new sites both live, www and non-www versions, ecommerce filters and product variants, and near-identical suburb pages.

05Titles, headings and on-page content

Does each page target one real search term, in the title, the main heading and the opening lines? Does it answer the question the buyer actually asks, in plain language, before the sales pitch?

06Structured data

Schema markup tells search engines what a page is: a service, a product, a list of questions. It must describe what is visible on the page. Markup that claims things the page does not show is a liability, not a shortcut.

07Google Business Profile and local signals

Verification status, primary category, service area, duplicates, photos, reviews and replies, plus whether your business details match across the directories Australians use.

08Links pointing at the site

Who links to you, whether any of it looks bought or spammy, and how your profile compares with the businesses on page one for your terms. This is the number that decides how hard a head term will be.

Core Web Vitals pass marks: Google Search Central.

The left screen is a crawl map: every page on the site and the links between them. Pages floating on their own, with nothing linking in, are the first thing we look for. The right screen shows what loads, in what order, and what slows the page down.
01

Why technical SEO comes first

A page Google cannot index will never rank, however good the writing. Technical faults are also the cheapest to find and fix, and the fix does not wear off.

02

A fault we find again and again

Duplicate versions of the same page: an old site still live, or a staging copy indexed by accident. Google splits its attention between them and neither ranks well.

03

What you need to give us

Read access to Google Search Console and Analytics if you have them. If you do not, setting them up in your name is part of the work, and they stay yours.

Local SEO services

Local SEO: how Australian businesses get into the map pack

§01

For most local searches in Australia, the first thing a buyer sees is a map with three businesses on it. In our September 2026 measurement, a map pack appeared on 12 of the 14 city SEO searches we tested. Local SEO is the work of getting into that box, and it runs on different rules from the ordinary results beneath it.

§02

Google says local results are based mainly on relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance (how far you are from the searcher) and prominence (how well known you are, including links and reviews). It also says plainly that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. You cannot change distance. Relevance and prominence are where a local SEO agency earns its keep.

§03

The rules matter as much as the tactics. Google does not allow a Business Profile for a virtual office, and service-area businesses, such as a mobile mechanic or a plumber working from home, should hide their address and show a service area instead. A common cause of suspension is a service-area business, often a tradie, showing a home address it should have hidden.

§04

For trade businesses, our tradie websites and SEO for tradies page covers licence display rules and Google Business Profile setup.

Is local SEO worth it? For a business that serves a defined area, usually yes: the map pack sits above the ordinary results on most local searches. Our local SEO services page covers the full Google Business Profile, reviews and map ranking work. If you run a small business on a tight budget, small business SEO explains what to do first and what to skip.

Ecommerce SEO services

Ecommerce SEO for Australian online stores

Ecommerce SEO is the fastest-growing part of Australian SEO demand we measured: searches for ecommerce SEO services roughly doubled on a year earlier. That makes sense. For an online store, organic search is the one channel that does not charge again for every visit.

Store SEO is mostly about category and collection pages. Those carry the valuable terms, such as “linen bedding” or “ceramic planters”, while product pages carry the long tail. The common problems are thin collection pages with no words on them, product descriptions copied from the supplier, and filters and variants that create thousands of duplicate URLs for Google to wade through.

Shopify is a sound base for SEO, and most Shopify SEO services come down to fixing those three problems. On WooCommerce, Magento and BigCommerce the same principles apply with different plumbing. Because we also build ecommerce stores for Australian brands, we can fix the template causing the problem rather than patching around it.

For the full playbook, see our ecommerce SEO agency page, covering Shopify SEO, Magento, Google Shopping free listings and migrations.

What Australian search actually looks like, including the parts that do not suit us

§01

In September 2026 we pulled Google Ads search volume for Australian search terms and measured 156 live Google Australia results in detail: who ranks, whether an AI Overview appears, whether a map pack appears, and which sites the AI summaries cite. Two findings are worth knowing before you spend anything on SEO in this country.

§02

One: AI Overviews depend on the subject. An AI Overview is the summary Google places above the ordinary results. When one appears, fewer people click through to any website. On local SEO searches they were rare. On anything with “AI” or “ecommerce” in it, they were almost always there.

FactoryJet measurement of 156 live Google Australia search results, 24 September 2026.

Two: some Australian cities are reachable and some are not

Ranking for competitive terms is decided largely by how many other websites reference yours. We counted that figure for every business on page one for the main SEO term in each capital, and compared the weakest of them with our own earned total of 28 linking domains. The result decided which city pages we built and which we did not.

Where we are not competing, and why we say so

Sydney, Perth and the Gold Coast carry the largest SEO search volumes in the country. The weakest business on page one measured 119 linking domains in Sydney, 125 in Perth and 136 on the Gold Coast, against our 28. The same arithmetic applies to you: if an agency proposes to win you a Sydney head term, ask how many sites link to the weakest business on page one today. If they cannot answer, the plan is a hope rather than a forecast.

A quick check: which kind of SEO help do you actually need?

Open the description that sounds most like your business. The honest answer is not always an SEO agency, and not always us.

AI-generated model: seven white signposts at a fork, one orange sign pointing to the right kind of SEO help

We are a local business and nobody finds us on Google Maps

Start with local SEO, and try it yourself first. Verify your Google Business Profile, pick the most specific category, add real photos and ask for reviews. If you are still invisible after a month, a local SEO audit will find why.

Our traffic dropped suddenly after a redesign or a platform move

That is a technical SEO problem, and it is urgent. Usually missing redirects, a noindex tag left on, or pages that changed address. A technical SEO audit finds it in days. Ask for our free review.

We run an online store and our collection pages do not rank

You need ecommerce SEO. Collection copy, duplicate URL control and product data. See ecommerce SEO services in Australia. If the store itself needs rebuilding, see Shopify development in Australia.

We have a marketer in-house and want direction, not a team

Look at SEO consulting. An audit, a written plan and a regular review call, with your marketer doing the work. Usually better value than a full retainer.

Buyers ask ChatGPT and Perplexity, and we are never named

That is AI search visibility. It builds on classic SEO but adds citation work. See our AI SEO and GEO service for Australian businesses.

Our website itself is slow, dated or hard to update

Fix the site before paying for SEO on it. See our web design for Australian businesses, with 7-day delivery for websites up to 5 pages.

Our traffic is fine but enquiries are not

That is not an SEO problem. More traffic will not fix it. Look at the offer, the page and the enquiry form first. We will tell you that on the free review rather than sell you search work.

How it runs

What the work looks like, and what it needs from you

Open any stage to see what happens and what we need from you. Search work fails more often through missing input from the client than through anything the agency does, and the two stages that need you most cannot be outsourced: subject matter review, and introductions.

Stage five in practice: we write the draft, the person who knows the work corrects it. That review is what makes a page accurate enough for Google and AI assistants to trust.
01

Free review

A few days

We crawl the site, check the Google Business Profile, read your Search Console data if you grant access, and look at who currently holds the positions you want. You get a written note on the three biggest problems.

What we need from you: Site address, and read access to Search Console if you have it.

02

Demand check

A few days

Before anything is scoped, we verify that Australians actually search for what you sell, using Google Ads volume rather than impression counts. This step decides whether there is a project at all, and sometimes the answer is that there is not.

What we need from you: A list of what you sell and where you sell it.

03

Written scope

About a week

A document naming each piece of work, what it should achieve, roughly when, and what it depends on from you. Repair work is priced as fixed milestones. Ongoing content and link work is separate, so you can take one without the other.

What we need from you: Time to read it properly and push back on anything vague.

04

Technical repair

Weeks

The finite work: indexing faults, speed, structure, internal linking, duplicate pages. This is where the fastest movement usually comes from, and it ends rather than continuing indefinitely.

What we need from you: Access to the site and hosting, or an introduction to whoever holds it.

05

Content and local

A quarter or two

Pages built on verified terms, and the Google Business Profile corrected and maintained. We write drafts, you correct the things only you would know, we publish.

What we need from you: Subject matter review. Nobody outside your business can supply this.

06

Earned links

Quarters

The slow lever, and the one that decides whether a competitive head term is reachable at all. Publishing things worth citing, genuine sponsorship, supplier and sector relationships.

What we need from you: Introductions, and patience. This is the part with no shortcut.

Six things we will not do

Ask any SEO company you are considering the same question. One that cannot name a single thing it refuses has either not thought about it or is willing to do things that will cost you later.

01

We do not buy links, and we will not work alongside someone who does

Google lists buying links for ranking purposes as link spam. The recovery from a manual penalty costs more than the links did and takes months, during which the site earns less than before anyone started.

02

We do not publish thin pages for every suburb

It is the oldest tactic in local search and it stopped working years ago. It also creates dozens of near-identical pages that compete with each other, which is a problem you then pay someone to unpick.

03

We do not promise a position on a date

Google publishes that some changes take hours and others take months. Any date attached to a ranking is invented, and the agencies who give you one are counting on you having forgotten by the time it passes.

04

We do not hold your domain, hosting or accounts

Everything is in your name from day one. If a supplier will not agree to that, it is because leaving is meant to be difficult, and that tells you what the relationship is built on.

05

We do not build pages for terms with no Australian volume

Every term is checked against Google Ads volume first. In our Australian measurements, whole groups of terms returned nothing at all. Building against those would have produced pages nobody could ever find.

06

We do not take the work when search is not your problem

If your traffic is fine and your enquiries are not, more traffic will not fix it. That is a conversion problem, and selling you search work for it would be taking money for something that cannot help.

Link buying as link spam: Google spam policies.

Scope, not packages

How much should I pay for SEO? What actually sets the cost

“How much should I expect to pay for SEO?” is the question Australians ask Google most about SEO. The honest answer is that it depends on the size of the gap between your site and page one, so we measure the gap first and quote a fixed price per stage. Engagements usually take one of four shapes.

01

SEO audit.

A ranked list of problems and a written plan. Some businesses take it to their own developer, and that is fine.

02

Technical and local repair.

Fixed milestones with an end date: indexing, speed, structure, Business Profile and business details.

03

Ongoing content and links.

Pages on verified terms and earned links, month by month once the repair has shown results.

04

SEO consulting.

Direction and review for a team that does the work itself.

Be careful with any SEO pricing that arrives before anyone has looked at your site. A package priced on a call cannot know whether your problem is a single noindex tag or a year of link earning.

SEO agencies in Australia worth knowing

We are one option, not the only one. These SEO companies appear most often when Australians search for an SEO agency or ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity for one. Each note is based on what the company says on its own website. Talk to two or three and compare what they measure.

Australia-wide

An SEO company for Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and regional Australia

SEO does not need anyone on site. We run engagements remotely, with shared documents, your own Search Console and Analytics, and calls in Australian business hours. A clinic in Geelong or a supplier in Newcastle gets the same senior team as a business in the Sydney CBD.

What matters more than a postcode is who does the work. FactoryJet has served more than 500 businesses since 2014, with more than a decade in commerce, including B2B ordering for Bombay Petals and the Belle Maison store built on Commerceflo. That is why our SEO work is strongest where search meets a website or a store we can change at the source.

SEO demand in Australia is concentrated but not only in the big two. In our measurement, SEO searches mentioning Sydney and Melbourne each ran at several thousand a month, Perth and Brisbane close behind, and Adelaide, Canberra and the Gold Coast each above a thousand.

SEO basics
Q01What does SEO mean?

Search engine optimisation. It is the work of making a website more likely to appear when someone searches for what that site offers. In practice it covers three separate things: making sure search engines can read the site, making sure the pages answer what people actually search for, and getting other websites to reference yours. Those three need different skills and pay back on very different timescales.

Q02What does an SEO agency do?

An SEO agency repairs the technical faults that stop search engines reading and indexing your pages, builds pages that answer what buyers type, sets up and maintains your Google Business Profile where local search matters, and earns mentions and links from real sites so Google treats you as credible. A good agency does those in that order, because that is the order that pays back fastest, and reports against enquiries rather than rankings alone.

Q03What are the four types of SEO?

They are usually split into technical, on-page, off-page and local. Technical is whether search engines can crawl and index the site. On-page is the content and structure of each page. Off-page is mostly links and mentions from elsewhere. Local is your Google Business Profile and the consistency of your business details. Most Australian small businesses get the largest early return from technical and local.

Q04What is the difference between SEO and technical SEO?

Technical SEO asks whether search engines can reach, read and index your pages at all. The broader discipline asks whether those pages deserve to rank once they can. Technical work is largely finite and one-off. Content and authority work is ongoing. Doing the second before the first is the most reliable way to waste money on search.

Q05What is the 80/20 rule in SEO?

It is the idea that a small share of the work produces most of the result. In practice, a handful of fixes usually matter far more than the rest: pages Google cannot index, a wrong or unverified Google Business Profile, one service page per service rather than none, and a few genuine links. A good SEO audit ranks problems by likely impact so you fix the 20 per cent first instead of working through a long list in order.

Q06How long does SEO take to show results?

Google says some changes might take effect in a few hours while others could take several months, and advises waiting a few weeks before judging whether a change helped. In our Australian work, technical repairs and Google Business Profile corrections often move things within weeks. Competing for a capital city head term against agencies with a decade of links is a matter of quarters.

Q07Does SEO work for small businesses?

It works well when a small business has a clear service and a defined area. Local search is where a small business can genuinely outrank a larger competitor, because distance from the searcher and a well-kept listing carry real weight. It works poorly when the business is too broad to describe in a search term, or when nobody is searching for what is being sold. Our small business SEO page covers the smaller-budget version.

Q08How to do SEO for a small business?

Start with the jobs that pay back fastest. Verify and complete your Google Business Profile, check in Search Console that Google can index your pages, and write one clear page for each service you sell, naming the areas you cover. Then ask every happy customer for a review and reply to all of them. Only after those are done is it worth spending on content at volume or link earning.

Q09Can a beginner do SEO?

Yes, the basics. A business owner can set up a Google Business Profile, write plain service pages, fix page titles and ask for reviews with no training beyond Google's free SEO Starter Guide. Where beginners come unstuck is technical faults that are invisible in the browser, such as a noindex tag or broken redirects after a redesign, and judging which search terms are worth the effort. Do the basics yourself and get help for those.

Choosing an SEO agency
Q10Who is the best SEO agency in Australia?

There is no single best SEO agency in Australia, and any list that claims one is marketing. The right SEO company depends on your size, your industry and whether you need local, technical or ecommerce work. StudioHawk, Prosperity Media, SIXGUN, Impressive Digital, Dilate Digital and Digital Nomads HQ all appear often in Australian results and AI answers. We list them, and ourselves, further up this page. Talk to two or three and compare what they measure.

Q11What is the difference between an SEO agency, an SEO company and an SEO consultant?

Agency and company mean the same thing in practice: a team that does the work for you. An SEO consultant is usually one experienced person who sets direction, audits and advises, while your own team or developer carries out the changes. A consultant suits a business that already has hands. An agency suits one that needs the work done. Ask either one who will actually touch your site.

Q12How do I choose an SEO company in Australia?

Ask five questions. Which of my search terms have real Australian volume? Who holds page one now, and how many sites link to the weakest of them? What will you fix first, and why? Will everything stay in my name? What will you refuse to do? A good SEO company answers all five plainly. One that leads with guaranteed rankings or a fixed number of links per month is selling activity, not results.

Q13Is an SEO agency worth it?

Only when real demand exists for what you sell and your site is not currently meeting it. We verify search volume against Google Ads data before recommending anything, and when the numbers do not support the work we say so. In Australia we have found whole service categories with almost no search volume. Building pages for those would have earned nothing, whoever built them.

Q14Should I hire an SEO agency or do it myself?

A split usually works best. Do the local basics in-house, because you know the business and the tasks are straightforward. Bring in help for technical audits, content at volume and earning links. If you already have a marketer or a developer, an SEO consulting arrangement, where someone sets direction and your team carries it out, is often better value than a full agency engagement.

Q15Do you guarantee first page rankings?

No, and you should be wary of anyone who does. Google publishes that some changes take hours and others take months, and nobody outside Google controls the result. What we do commit to is a written scope, a named list of search terms, a monthly report against enquiries and impressions, and fixes delivered on the dates we agree. Those are things we control.

Q16Do you work with businesses in Sydney, Perth and the Gold Coast?

Yes. We work with businesses anywhere in Australia, remotely and in Australian business hours. We are also honest that the Sydney, Perth and Gold Coast head terms for SEO itself are held by agencies with far more links than we have, so we do not chase those terms for our own site. For your business, the question is how strong your own competitors are, and we measure that before we quote.

Q17Do you do SEO for tradies, dentists and online stores?

Yes, and each needs a different mix. Tradies win mostly on the Google Business Profile, reviews and service-area pages. Dental practices need the same local work plus copy that follows the Ahpra advertising guidelines. Online stores live or die on collection pages, product data and duplicate URL control. We have a separate page for each, linked below, so you can see how the work differs.

Cost and contracts
Q18How much should I expect to pay for SEO?

It depends on the size of the gap between your site and page one, not on a standard package. The drivers are how many technical faults the site has, how many pages need writing, how strong the page-one businesses are, how many locations you serve and whether links need earning. We quote a fixed price per stage after measuring. Published Australian price ranges by tier are in our SEO cost in Australia guide.

Q19How much does SEO cost in Australia?

Australian SEO pricing tracks competition and scope rather than the postcode: a regional trade business with weak competitors needs far less work than a store competing nationally. Ask any agency to price the diagnosis separately from the ongoing work. Our SEO cost in Australia guide compares package, hourly and audit prices from six published Australian sources, with GST explained.

Q20Does SEO cost more in Sydney or Melbourne than in Brisbane or Adelaide?

Often, because the competition is stronger, not because the work is different. More linking websites behind the page-one businesses means more content and more link earning to close the gap. The city sets the size of the gap, and the gap sets the cost. Our SEO cost guide breaks published Australian price ranges down by city.

Q21How much should SEO cost for a small business?

Less than most retainers assume, if the work is scoped to the actual fault. Many Australian small businesses need a one-off technical repair and a properly set up Google Business Profile, then little for months. Being sold a large retainer before anyone has diagnosed the problem is the most common way money is wasted. Published local and small business ranges are in our SEO cost guide.

Q22How much does an SEO audit cost?

The price follows the size of the site and what you get back. A small business site is a few days of work, while a store with thousands of product and filter pages takes far longer to crawl and trace. The bigger difference is output: a ranked list of fixes with reasons is worth more than a raw tool export. Our SEO cost in Australia guide lists published audit prices from Australian providers.

Q23Should I sign a 12-month SEO contract?

Not before a diagnosis. Technical repair is finite work with an end date, so it should be priced as fixed milestones. Ongoing content and link work can reasonably run month to month once you have seen the first results. If an agency insists on a long lock-in before it has looked at your site, ask what happens if the first quarter shows nothing. We price repair and ongoing work separately.

Q24Is it worth paying for backlinks?

No. Google lists buying or selling links for ranking purposes as link spam in its spam policies. A bought link stops working the moment Google devalues the source, so you are renting a ranking rather than owning one. If the source is penalised instead of merely devalued, the damage lands on your site and the recovery takes months of work you also pay for. Earned references cost more effort up front and carry neither risk.

Local SEO and Google Business Profile
Q25What is local SEO vs SEO?

They are judged on different things. Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, where prominence includes links and reviews. Ordinary results are ranked on the page itself and who links to it. A suburban clinic gets more from an hour on its Business Profile. A national supplier gets more from an hour on its service pages.

Q26Is a Google Business Profile free?

Yes. Creating, verifying and keeping a Business Profile costs nothing. Google also states there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. So if someone calls claiming your listing will be suspended or ranked lower unless you pay, treat it as a scam. Google Ads is a separate paid product and buying it does not change your free listing.

Q27How can I get my business to show up on Google Maps?

Create a Google Business Profile and verify it, which is the step most people stall on. Then complete every field, choose the most specific primary category available, add real photographs and reply to reviews. Ranking on Maps depends heavily on distance from the searcher, so your location does much of the work. Relevance and prominence, including reviews and links, decide the rest.

Q28Can any business have a Google Business Profile?

Not every address qualifies. Google does not allow a profile for a virtual office, meaning a rented mailing address you do not operate from, and a co-working desk only qualifies if it is staffed and receives customers during business hours. Service-area businesses, such as a plumber working from home, should hide their address and show a service area instead. Breaking these rules usually ends in suspension.

Q29Why is my business not showing up on Google?

Most often the profile is unverified, duplicates an older listing, or has been suspended for a guidelines breach, commonly a service-area business showing an address it should have hidden. It can also be that you are searching from far away, since Maps results move with the searcher. Check the profile status, then look for duplicates, then check your categories.

Q30Should I build a separate page for every suburb I serve?

No. Near-identical suburb pages stopped working years ago and now compete with each other. Build one strong page per real service, a clear service area on your Business Profile, and separate location pages only where you genuinely have a location or a meaningfully different offer. Google also suggests a service area of no more than about two hours of driving from your base for most businesses.

Q31Is local SEO worth it?

For a business that serves a defined area, usually yes, because the Google map pack sits above the ordinary results on most local searches. When we checked 14 Australian city searches for SEO terms in September 2026, a map pack appeared on most of them. The core work, a verified Business Profile, reviews and one page per service, costs little and keeps paying back. It is less useful for a business that sells nationally online. Our local SEO page explains the work in full.

Technical, audit and ecommerce SEO
Q32What does an SEO audit include?

A proper SEO audit checks whether Google can crawl and index every page that matters, page speed against the Core Web Vitals, site structure and internal links, duplicate pages and canonical tags, titles and headings, structured data, your Google Business Profile, and the links pointing at the site. The useful part is the ranking: which three problems cost you most, and what to fix first.

Q33How long does an SEO audit take?

For a typical small business site, a few days. A large ecommerce store with thousands of product and filter pages takes longer, because the crawl itself is bigger and duplicate pages need tracing. Our free review is a lighter version: a crawl, a Business Profile check and your Search Console data, returned as a written note on the three biggest problems.

Q34Why is Google not crawling my website?

Check in this order: a robots.txt rule blocking the pages, a noindex tag left over from a staging site, content that only appears once JavaScript runs, no internal links pointing at the page, or a site too new to have been reached yet. Search Console names the cause in its page indexing report, and that is the fastest place to start rather than guessing.

Q35Do Core Web Vitals affect SEO?

They are part of how Google assesses page experience. Google publishes the pass marks: Largest Contentful Paint within 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint under 200 milliseconds and Cumulative Layout Shift under 0.1. Speed alone will not lift a weak page above a strong one, but a slow site loses visitors before they read anything, which hurts enquiries whatever your ranking.

Q36Can ChatGPT do an SEO audit?

Only a partial one. ChatGPT can review a page you paste in, suggest better titles and spot thin or confusing copy. It cannot crawl your whole site, see your Search Console indexing data or measure how many sites link to your competitors, and it will sometimes state a problem that is not there. Use it as a second reader on individual pages, and use a crawler plus Search Console for the audit itself.

Q37How often should an SEO audit be performed?

A full audit once a year suits most small business sites, plus a quick check each month in Search Console for new indexing errors. Run a fresh audit straight away after a redesign, a platform move or a sudden traffic drop, because that is when redirects break and noindex tags get left on. Large ecommerce stores that add products weekly benefit from a lighter technical crawl every quarter.

Q38What is the difference between a geo audit and a SEO audit?

An SEO audit asks whether Google can crawl, index and rank your pages in ordinary results. A GEO audit, short for generative engine optimisation, asks whether AI tools such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews name and cite your business when buyers ask about what you sell. It checks real prompts, which sources the AI quotes and whether your pages give direct, citable answers. Most businesses need the SEO audit first.

Q39Which tool is best for SEO audit?

Start with Google Search Console, which is free and the only tool that shows how Google itself sees your pages. Add a crawler such as Screaming Frog, free up to 500 URLs, to find broken links, redirects and missing titles. Semrush and Ahrefs add backlink and competitor data on a paid plan. No tool ranks the problems by business impact for you, which is the part an experienced person still has to do.

Q40What is ecommerce SEO?

Ecommerce SEO is search work for online stores. It focuses on category pages, which usually carry the most valuable search terms, product pages with unique descriptions, structured data for price and stock, and controlling the duplicate pages that filters and product variants create. For Australian stores it also means clear shipping and returns information that matches the Australian Consumer Law obligations you already have.

Q41Is Shopify good for SEO?

Shopify is a sound base for SEO: pages load quickly, sitemaps are automatic and titles are editable. The common problems are fixable: thin collection pages, duplicate product URLs reached through collections, apps that slow the store, and product descriptions copied from the supplier. Shopify SEO services mostly means fixing those, then writing collection pages for terms Australians actually search.

AI and the future of search
Q42Is SEO still worth it in 2026?

Yes, particularly for local services in Australia. When we measured 24 Australian SEO search results in September 2026, an AI Overview appeared on only 2 of the 14 city searches, while a Google map pack appeared on most of them. National and informational searches showed AI Overviews far more often. So local rankings still earn the click, while national content needs to be written so AI summaries can cite it.

Q43Is SEO replaced by AI?

Not replaced, but the target is widening. Being found now means appearing in ordinary results, in Google AI Overviews, and in the answers ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity give. The work overlaps heavily: pages with clear structure, direct answers and verifiable facts do well in all three. Pages padded with adjectives do badly in all three. We cover the AI side on our AI SEO page.

Q44Can SEO be done by AI?

Parts of it. AI is genuinely useful for drafting, for finding patterns in crawl data and for summarising a competitor set. It is unreliable for the judgement calls: which terms are worth pursuing, whether a page deserves to exist, and whether a link is worth having. Sites that hand the whole job to a model tend to produce a lot of pages and very little traffic.

Q45What is an AI SEO agency?

An agency that works on getting a business named and cited in AI answers, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, as well as in classic results. It is sometimes called generative engine optimisation, or GEO. In Australia the demand is real but still small next to classic SEO: about a thousand monthly searches across AI SEO terms against tens of thousands for SEO. We do both, and the AI side has its own page.
