What does a web design company in Melbourne actually do?

§01

A good web design company in Melbourne builds a site that loads fast on a phone, says what you sell in the first screen, and is structured around what Melbourne buyers type into Google. It connects to the software you already run, hands you the domain and every login, and measures success in enquiries, not in how the homepage looks on launch day.

§02

And what does an SEO consultant in Melbourne do?

An SEO consultant diagnoses why your website is not producing enquiries, puts the causes in the order that pays back fastest, and either fixes them or briefs whoever will. That is different from a retainer, which buys a fixed number of hours whether or not they are aimed at your real problem. FactoryJet works both ways: we build and run the work, or we advise and your team executes.

§03

Melbourne is one of the two busiest search markets in Australia for this work. Across web design, SEO, ecommerce and AI services, Melbourne records about 10,330 searches a month that name the city, just behind Sydney. For web design alone, and for ecommerce and AI agents, it is the busiest city in the country. That means more buyers, and more agencies competing for them, so this page spends as much time on how to judge a web designer as it does on selling ours.

Five reasons a Melbourne website stops bringing in work

Five Melbourne businesses can have the same complaint, that the website does not bring in work, and five different causes with very different costs to fix. Being sold a content retainer when the real problem is a noindex tag is how owners come to believe search does not work for them. Open the one that sounds like you.

Traffic is fine, enquiries are not

Likely cause: A conversion problem, not a search problem. More traffic will not fix it, and buying SEO will waste your money.

What fixes it: Look at what the page asks a visitor to do and how hard it is to do it on a phone. Usually a clearer first screen, a shorter form and real proof of past work.

You rank for your business name and nothing else

Likely cause: A content problem. The site describes the company rather than answering what buyers search for.

What fixes it: One strong page per service, named the way customers say it. This usually moves within a quarter.

Pages exist but do not appear in Google at all

Likely cause: A technical problem, and the cheapest of the five to fix.

What fixes it: Something is blocking indexing: a robots rule, a leftover noindex tag, or content that only loads after JavaScript. Search Console names the cause.

You appear in search but never in the map results

Likely cause: A local listing problem.

What fixes it: The Google Business Profile is unverified, miscategorised or duplicated, or your business details differ across directories. Usually a one-off fix.

You rank on page two and never move

Likely cause: An authority problem, and the slowest to fix. Other sites do not reference you.

What fixes it: Earned mentions and links over quarters: local data worth quoting, supplier and industry relationships, genuine sponsorships. Never bought links.

The Melbourne search market

What Melbourne website design searches look like in September 2026

Victoria gained 19,581 businesses across 2025–26, the second largest net increase of any state or territory, within a national total of 2,814,778 actively trading businesses at 30 June 2026. More businesses means more people competing for the same attention, which is part of why Melbourne is a harder search market than Brisbane or Adelaide.

The demand is real. “Web design melbourne” is searched about 1,900 times a month and “website design melbourne” about 1,300, and they are largely the same buyer using different words. A smaller group searches for a person rather than a firm, “melbourne web designer”, and they tend to be owner-operators who want to deal with one named human. We wrote this page for both.

We checked who holds page one on 24 September 2026, counting how many separate websites link to each one (known as referring domains, the main measure of a site’s authority). For “web design company melbourne” the weakest agency on page one had links from 335 websites and the middle of the pack about 780. Those positions belong to firms with a decade of reputation, and nobody reaches them in months. The softer searches are different: one small studio on page one for “melbourne web designer” had links from just 3 websites. Depth and clarity still win there.

One more thing worth knowing. Most of these searches show a Google Maps pack, the three local businesses with pins, above the ordinary results. That pack goes to businesses with a Melbourne address close to the searcher. We do not have a Melbourne office and will not invent one to get in. What we can do is set up your own Google Business Profile so that you are in it.

Who we build for in Melbourne

Small business website design across Melbourne, suburb by suburb

About 320 Melbourne searches a month are for small business website design specifically. Every industry buys differently, so the site has to match how your customers decide, not a template. These are the Melbourne businesses we build for most.

01

Professional services

CBD, Southbank, South Yarra

Accountants, lawyers, brokers and consultancies. Long decision cycles and buyers who read several pages before making contact, so depth of content beats speed of contact.

02

Health and allied health

Richmond, Box Hill, the eastern suburbs

Driven heavily by Maps and reviews, where how close the searcher is does much of the ranking work. Online booking has to connect to the practice system, not sit beside it.

03

Manufacturing and trade supply

Dandenong, the north and west, out to Geelong

Often B2B with procurement teams involved, so the site has to survive scrutiny rather than convert on the spot. Product catalogues and trade ordering matter more than hero images.

04

Creative and studio businesses

Fitzroy, Collingwood, Brunswick

Usually strong on brand and weak on technical foundations. A pleasant problem: the fixes are quick and the payoff is immediate.

05

Hospitality and independent retail

CBD laneways, Carlton, St Kilda

Discovery happens in Maps and on phones, often while someone is already walking nearby. Opening hours, menus and a tappable map link come before anything else.

06

Trades and construction

Across the whole metro area

Phone-first buyers searching from a job address. A clear call button and the suburbs you cover, in the first screen, matter more than anything else on the page.

In a laneway cafe, most visitors arrive on a phone within a few hundred metres of the door. Hours, the menu and a map link have to load before anything else.

Web design in Melbourne

Website design in Melbourne, when we build it: six things every site gets

We design and build the site, rework the content with you, and launch it. Websites of up to five pages qualify for our 7-day delivery from an approved scope. Builds with bookings, logins or integrations take longer, and you get the date at scope rather than discovering it in week six.

CAP‑01

Built to a measured standard, not a described one

Google publishes the marks it judges page experience on: Largest Contentful Paint within 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint under 200 milliseconds, and Cumulative Layout Shift under 0.1. We build against those numbers and show you the before and after measurement rather than telling you the site is fast.

CAP‑02

Structured around what Melbourne buyers search

One page per service you genuinely want enquiries for, named the way customers say it. A firm selling business restructuring advice needs a page called that, not one called advisory solutions. This is the single most common thing we change on Melbourne sites, and it is usually the cheapest.

CAP‑03

Content that answers before it sells

Each page opens by answering the question that brought the reader there, then covers how the work runs, what it asks of you, what can go wrong, and what happens next. Pages written this way are also the ones AI assistants quote, because they contain answers rather than adjectives.

CAP‑04

Designed for the phone first

Most local enquiries start on a phone, often on a tram or between jobs. We design the mobile view first: readable text, buttons you can tap with a thumb, a short form, and nothing that pushes the page sideways. The desktop version follows from that.

CAP‑05

Integrated with what you already run

Practice management software, a booking system, a CRM, Xero or MYOB. Most Melbourne businesses of any size already run something, and a website that ignores it creates double entry for whoever does your admin. We connect them where an interface exists and say plainly when one does not.

CAP‑06

Handed over with nothing held back

Domain, hosting, site and admin access to every account, all in your name. If you leave, nothing breaks and nothing has to be bought back. We have taken on enough rescue work from businesses who did not own their own domain to be firm about this.

Core Web Vitals marks: Google Search Central, Understanding Core Web Vitals and Google search results.

AI-generated photo showing The receptionist at a Richmond physiotherapy clinic checking the booking system while a patient waits
Beyond the brochure site

A website that works with the systems behind the front desk

A Richmond physio, a Box Hill dental practice or a South Yarra accountant rarely needs a prettier homepage. They need the booking button to write into the practice system, the enquiry form to land in the CRM with the right tags, and the invoice to reach Xero or MYOB without someone retyping it.

That is where custom web design earns its keep over a template. We connect the site to the tools you already run through their official connections, and we say plainly when a tool has no way in, so you can decide whether to change it or live with a manual step.

If the repeated admin behind the website is the real problem, such as sorting enquiries or copying orders between systems, that is a job for an AI agent built into your existing tools, and Melbourne is the city with the most searches for exactly that. For a first opinion on where AI fits at all, see AI consulting for Australian businesses.

SEO consultant Melbourne

SEO consulting in Melbourne, when your team does the work

About 1,000 Melbourne searches a month are for an SEO consultant rather than an agency. Consultant intent is advisory: the buyer usually has someone who can do the work and wants direction. Google itself says some changes take effect in a few hours and others take several months, and advises waiting a few weeks before judging a change. We plan around that.

§01

A diagnosis you can act on without us

A written audit that names each fault, ranks it by what it is costing you rather than by how hard it is to fix, and says who should do it. Plenty of Melbourne businesses take that document to their existing developer and never engage us further. That is a legitimate outcome, and the audit is scoped to work as a standalone piece.

§02

Demand checked before anything is written

We verify search volume against Google Ads data before recommending a single page, because Search Console impressions can be inflated by rank-tracking software rather than by people. If a term has no genuine Australian volume, we say so.

§03

A brief your team can execute

If you have a marketer or a developer, the most efficient arrangement is often that we set direction and they do the work. You get the judgement without paying for hours your own team can cover. We write the briefs, review what comes back, and stay out of the way otherwise.

§04

Local search set up properly, once

Google Business Profile claimed, verified, categorised to the most specific option, service areas set honestly, and business details made consistent across every directory you appear in. For most Melbourne businesses this is the highest-return hour available, and it is a one-off rather than a retainer.

§05

Links earned, never bought

We earn mentions by making things worth mentioning: original local data, useful tools, genuine sponsorships and supplier relationships. We do not buy links, use private blog networks, or run automated outreach. Bought links are the fastest route to a manual penalty.

§06

Reporting aimed at enquiries

The search terms bringing people in, what they did after arriving, and how many enquiries came from search. Rankings are in there, but they are the weakest number in the report. A first position on a term nobody searches is worth nothing.

You get: A short written note on the three biggest problems and what each is likely costing you.

02

A written scope with a fixed price

Pages, content, integrations, who supplies what, and the date. If the right answer is advice rather than a build, the scope says so.

You get: A scope and fixed quote you can take to anyone. Nothing is charged before you have read it.

03

You get: A sitemap and page briefs, named the way customers search.

04

You get: Approved designs for every page template.

You get: A staging site with a speed report you can check yourself.

06

We launch, watch for errors in the first days, and hand over the domain, hosting and admin access in your name. Websites up to 5 pages qualify for our 7-day delivery from approved scope and content.

You get: A live site you own outright, plus a short guide to editing it.

07

Support and search work after launch

Optional. Monthly fixes and updates, or an SEO consulting rhythm where we review data and brief your team. You can stop either at any time.

You get: The same team that built it, still answering.

Monthly fixes and updates are covered by our website maintenance plans.

Choosing someone

Six questions that separate Melbourne web design agencies quickly

More Melbourne searches ask who to hire than what the work costs, so this is the part of the page worth your time. Ask all six of whoever you are considering, including us. Watch the right-hand column: it is where the difference usually shows.

Ask thisA good answer sounds likeWalk away if you hear
Who will actually do the work?A name, a role, and a yes to whether they will be on your calls.A vague reference to “the team” or a promise that you will be well looked after.
What happens if I leave in six months? You keep the domain, the site, the content and admin access to everything.Any hesitation, or a mention of transfer fees, handover charges or licence terms.
Can you show me a site you built two years ago and run a speed test on it now? They open it and run the test with you, whatever it says.Screenshots, a portfolio page, or an explanation of why that client changed things.
How did you choose these keywords?Real search volume, checked against advertising data, with the numbers shown.A tool difficulty score alone, or a long list of terms with no volume attached.
What will you refuse to do?A specific answer. Buying links is the obvious one and the most important.Nothing comes to mind, or whatever the client wants.
What should I see in ninety days, and what will still be unfinished?A leading indicator with a date, plus honesty that authority takes quarters.A ranking promise, a position guarantee, or a date attached to page one.

Why there is no “best Melbourne web design agencies” list here

Google shows several versions of that question to Melbourne searchers, so we know you are asking it. We will not rank our own competitors, because a list written by us is marketing wearing a lab coat. Every agency that publishes one puts itself at the top. Build your own shortlist instead: search the terms you want to win, ask other owners in your industry who they use, then put the six questions to each. Three conversations is usually enough.

Ecommerce website design Melbourne

When the website has to sell, not just inform

§01

Ecommerce website design is the largest Melbourne web search after the core design terms, at about 390 searches a month, and Melbourne has more ecommerce searches naming the city than anywhere else in Australia. Some of the most valuable are manufacturers and wholesalers in the south east and the west who want trade customers to reorder online instead of by email.

§02

That is a different build from a brochure site. Stock has to sync, GST has to be right, trade pricing has to show only to logged-in accounts, shipping has to work with Australia Post and couriers, and orders have to land in Xero or MYOB. FactoryJet has spent more than a decade on commerce builds, including B2B ordering for Bombay Petals.

§03

FAQ

Web design and SEO in Melbourne: questions buyers ask

Replies within 24 hours.

Choosing a Melbourne web designer
Q01What are some good web design agencies in Melbourne?

Melbourne has a deep design market, and for pure brand and visual work there are studios here that do it better than we do. We are a better fit when the site has to perform: load fast, rank, connect to software you already run, and keep working two years later. If you need a beautiful brochure, hire a studio. If you need an asset that brings in enquiries, ask harder engineering questions.

Q02Who are the best website designers in Australia?

There is no single best, and any list written by an agency tends to put that agency first. Directories such as Clutch and DesignRush collect reviews, which helps, but the better test is evidence you can check yourself: a live site they built two years ago that is still fast, a named person who will do your work, and a plain answer about who owns the domain and the code when the job ends.

Q03How to choose a web design agency?

Ask who does the work, what happens if you leave, and whether they can show you a site they built that is still fast today. The first answer tells you whether the senior person in the meeting stays involved. The second tells you whether you own your own business presence. The third separates people who build for launch day from people who build for the long term.

Q04How do I find a great website designer in Melbourne?

Start with sites you admire in your own industry and scroll to the footer, where many credit the builder. Then search the terms you want to win and note who ranks, since that is a live demonstration. Shortlist three, send each the same short brief, and compare how they answer the six questions on this page. How someone scopes your job says more than their portfolio.

Q05Who is the best SEO agency in Melbourne?

There is no single best one, and any agency that answers this question with its own name is telling you how it sells. Melbourne has strong specialists: some excel at technical repair, others at content, others at digital PR. The better question is which one fits your problem: a site Google cannot read, a site nobody links to, or a site that ranks and does not convert.

Q06Who is a reputable SEO consultant in Melbourne?

Judge on evidence rather than reputation. Ask to see a site they worked on, then check it yourself: run a speed test, search for the terms they say they won, and see whether the pages read like they were written for a person. A reputable consultant will happily give you a client to call. Be wary of anyone who cannot name a single thing they refuse to do.

Q07What are some reputable SEO agencies in Melbourne?

We will not publish a ranked list of our competitors, because any list we write is self-serving. Build your own shortlist instead: search the terms you want to win and see who ranks, ask other business owners in your industry who they use, then put the same six questions to each of them. Three honest conversations separate people quickly, and they work on us too.

Q08What does an SEO consultant do?

A consultant diagnoses and directs rather than doing everything themselves. They audit the site, work out which problems cost you the most, put them in order, and either fix them or brief whoever will. For a business with an in-house marketer or an existing developer, that is often better value than a full agency retainer, because you are buying judgement rather than hours.

Q09Do I need a web designer who is based in Melbourne?

Not for the work itself. Design, build and SEO all run well over video calls, shared designs and written plans, and we keep calls inside Melbourne business hours. What does need local knowledge is the content: your suburbs, your customers and how they search. We gather that in the first workshop. If weekly face-to-face meetings matter to you, a local studio with an office is the better choice.

Cost, scope & timing
Q10How much does it cost to design a website in Melbourne?

It comes down to how many pages you need, whether the content already exists, and what the site has to connect to. A five page site for a consultancy and a site with bookings and a customer login are different jobs. Any figure quoted before someone has looked at yours is a guess. We review, scope it in writing, and give you a fixed price for that scope before you commit. Our website cost guide lists published Australian market ranges.

Q11How much should I pay a web designer?

Pay for the outcome you need, not a page count. The things that move the price are custom design versus a template, who writes the content, integrations such as bookings or a CRM, ecommerce, and whether support after launch is included. Compare quotes on the same written scope, and check what is excluded. A lower quote that leaves out content, hosting setup or ownership often costs more by the end.

Q12How much does SEO cost in Melbourne?

It depends on the size of the problem rather than the size of the city. A site with clean structure that needs content and local listings sorted is a smaller job than one where Google cannot crawl half the pages. We audit first, then price repair work as fixed milestones and ongoing content and link work separately, so you can see what each part buys and stop either one. Our SEO cost guide breaks published Australian ranges down by city.

Q13Where can I find SEO services in Melbourne on a small budget?

Low-cost and cheap are different things. Cheap SEO usually means automated link building and mass-produced content, which can leave you worse off after a Google update. A small budget works best on a scope matched to your real problem. If your site has a handful of technical faults and no local listing, that is a modest fix and does not need a large monthly retainer.

Q14Is there a monthly fee to have a website?

Yes, though it is usually small. You pay yearly for the domain and monthly or yearly for hosting. If the site takes bookings or payments there is normally a platform or transaction fee too. What you should not pay is a monthly fee purely to keep pages online with an agency that holds the keys. Everything we build is yours outright.

Q15How long does it typically take to build a website?

Websites of up to five pages qualify for our 7-day delivery, counted from an approved scope with content ready. Larger sites, ecommerce stores and builds with bookings or integrations take longer, and you get the date in writing at scope. The build is rarely the slow part. Waiting on copy, photos and sign-off is, so we flag early which items sit with you.

Q16How many pages should a good website have?

Enough to answer what buyers ask and no more. Most Melbourne service businesses need a home page, one page per service they genuinely want enquiries for, an about page with real people on it, proof of past work, and a contact page. Extra pages on topics nobody searches do not help you rank. One strong page beats five thin ones covering the same ground.

Website design & build
Q17Is web design still in demand in 2026?

Yes. Melbourne alone records thousands of searches a month for web design, website design and web designers, and AI tools have changed how sites are built more than whether businesses need one. What has shifted is the bar: buyers now expect a fast mobile site, clear answers on the page, and content that AI assistants and Google can quote. Template sites that say little are the ones losing out.

Q18What are the 7 C’s of a website?

It is a framework for judging a site: context (layout and look), content, community, customisation, communication, connection (links to other sites) and commerce. It is a useful checklist rather than a law. For a Melbourne service business the practical version is simpler: say what you do in the first screen, prove it, make contact easy on a phone, and load fast.

Q19How do I increase my website speed?

Measure before changing anything. Google publishes the marks it uses: Largest Contentful Paint within 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint under 200 milliseconds, and Cumulative Layout Shift under 0.1. Most slow Australian small business sites fail on one thing, oversized images loading first. Compressing them, serving a modern format and removing unused plugins fixes the majority of cases.

Q20Why do websites run slowly?

Because the page asks the browser to download more than it needs. The usual causes are photos uploaded straight off a phone at full size, a page builder shipping code for features you do not use, a stack of tracking scripts, and hosting shared with too many other sites. Server location matters less than people assume for Australian traffic. The other four are worth checking first.

Q21How can I make my website mobile-friendly?

Test on a real phone, not a resized browser window. What breaks most often is text too small to read without zooming, buttons too close together to tap, forms that push the submit button off screen, and images forcing sideways scrolling. Fix those four and you have handled most of it. Google indexes the mobile version of your site, so the mobile view is the real one.

Q22What are common website mistakes?

The costliest is not saying what you do in the first screen. After that: no clear way to contact you from a phone, a form asking eight questions when three would do, stock photos that could belong to any business in Australia, service pages written in internal job titles rather than customer language, and no evidence you have done the work before.

Q23What is the best website builder for small businesses in Australia?

There is no single best one, and anyone naming one without asking what you sell is guessing. For a simple brochure site you will maintain yourself, a hosted builder is sensible. For products, a dedicated commerce platform such as Shopify serves you better. If you need custom logic, bookings or an integration with software you already run, a builder will fight you and a built site will not.

Q24Can you build an ecommerce website for a Melbourne business?

Yes. Ecommerce website design is one of the larger Melbourne searches outside core web design, and it is a big part of our work. We build on Shopify and other platforms, connect stock, shipping and accounting tools such as Xero, and set up GST correctly. See our ecommerce development and Shopify development pages for Australian businesses for how those projects run.

Q25How long does SEO take to show results in 2026?

Google says some changes might take effect in a few hours while others could take several months, and advises waiting a few weeks before judging a change. In practice, technical repairs and Google Business Profile corrections can move things within weeks. Competing for the main Melbourne terms against agencies with a decade of links is a matter of quarters. Anyone promising page one in a month is selling something.

Q26How to tell if your SEO is working?

Pick two numbers before the work starts and hold whoever does it to those. The best pair is enquiries from organic search, and impressions on a named list of commercial terms. Both live in tools you own, Search Console and Analytics, not in an agency dashboard you lose access to. If a report leads with rankings and buries enquiries, ask why.

Q27Is an SEO agency worth it?

It is worth it when there is real search demand for what you sell and your site is not meeting it. It is not worth it when nobody is searching, when your margins cannot support the wait, or when the real problem is that the site does not convert the traffic it already gets. We check demand against Google Ads volume before recommending anything.

Q28Should I hire an SEO agency or do it myself?

Do the local basics yourself, because they are genuinely doable and you know your business best. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile, keep your name, address and phone number consistent, and ask happy customers for reviews. Hire out the work that needs tooling and time: technical audits, content at volume, and earning links from real Victorian sites.

Q29Is SEO still relevant in 2026?

Yes, and for Melbourne web design searches more than most. When we checked Google Australia on 24 September 2026, there was no AI Overview on "web design company melbourne", "web design agency melbourne" or "melbourne web designer". The ordinary results and the Maps pack still earn the click there. Cost questions were different: those did show an AI Overview.

Q30Why is Google not crawling my website?

The usual causes, in the order worth checking: a robots.txt file blocking the pages, a noindex tag left over from a staging site, content that only exists after JavaScript runs, no internal links pointing at the page, or a site too new for Google to have reached. Search Console names the cause in its page indexing report, which is the fastest place to look.

Q31How can I get my business to show up on Google Maps?

Create a Google Business Profile and verify it, which is where most people stall. Verification is by phone, email, video or postcard depending on your business type. Once verified, complete every field, choose the most specific primary category, and add real photos. Maps ranking leans heavily on how close the searcher is, so a CBD address and a Dandenong address will not rank the same for one query.

Q32Is a Google Business Profile free?

Completely. Creating, verifying and managing one costs nothing and there is no ongoing charge. If someone rings claiming your listing will be suspended unless you pay, it is a scam, and those calls are common in Australia. You may separately choose to pay for Google Ads, but that is a different product and it has no effect on your free listing.

Q33Why is my business not showing up on Google?

Most often the profile is unverified, duplicates an older listing, or has been suspended for a guideline breach such as a service-area business showing a home address. It can also be that you are searching from far away, since Maps results shift with the searcher’s location. Check the profile status first, then look for duplicate listings, then check your categories.

Q34What is local SEO vs SEO?

They are judged on different things. Local results rank mostly on your Google Business Profile, how close you are to the searcher, and whether your business details agree across the web. Ordinary results rank on the page itself and who links to it. A Richmond dentist gets more from an hour on the Business Profile than an hour of content. A Melbourne software firm selling nationally is the other way around.
